PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s men’s singles shuttler Eogene Ewe is still waiting for his moment on the Thomas Cup stage – and he hopes it will finally arrive in Horsens later this month.
The 21-year-old was part of the squad at the previous edition in Chengdu in 2024 but did not get the chance to make his debut, and with the final team for this year yet to be confirmed, he remains firmly in contention.
With Lee Zii Jia still recovering from an ankle injury, a spot could open up alongside Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin at the biennial tournament to be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24-May 3.
“If I get to be part of the team, I’ll be competing against players who are ranked much higher than me, but I see it as a good challenge,” said Eogene.
“I’m always ready to participate and compete.”
Malaysia have been drawn into Group B alongside Japan, England, and Finland.
If world No. 79 Eogene gets the call to head to Horsens, he could face Japan’s world No. 19 Yushi Tanaka, an opponent he lost to previously at the 2024 China Masters.
But before looking too far ahead, Eogene is keeping his focus on his training while he waits for word from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
“I have not gotten any info about the Thomas Cup yet, but I’ll prepare myself the best I can in case anything happens,” he said.
The deadline to finalise the squad is on Friday.
