PETALING JAYA: It was double delight for Malaysia at the World Championships in Paris after mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei created history by reaching the final on Saturday (Aug 30).
Tang Jie-Ee Wei are the first mixed pair to reach the final in the world meet.
They surpassed the feat of Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty who were the country's only bronze medal winners at the 2006 Madrid edition.
It was however, far from an easy task for Tang Jie-Ee Wei as they not only had to contend with France’s Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue, but also the pressure from 9,000 home fans inside the Adidas Arena but they pulled off an incredible 21-18, 21-16 win.
The 52-minute battle was fiercely contested, with Gicquel-Delrue putting up strong resistance against the Malaysians.
However, Tang Jie-Ee Wei held their nerves to carve out a historic moment, becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to make the final after prevailing 21-18, 21-16.
They will face China’s second seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin in the final on Sunday (Aug 31).
Just before their match, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah created history by becoming the first women's doubles from Malaysia to reach the final.
