Tze Yong out for at least two weeks with knee injury

PETALING JAYA: Men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong (pic) will have to take more time off after being diagnosed with an injury to his right knee.

This was confirmed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in a statement released yesterday, stating that Tze Yong will need to rest for at least two weeks before returning to action.

However, his comeback will also depend on his physical condition and the speed of his recovery.

“Tze Yong was forced to retire midway through the match due to discomfort in his knee. Following medical evaluation, he has been diagnosed with a strain to the knee and will be out of action for at least two weeks pending further assessment.

“BAM wish Tze Yong a smooth and speedy recovery,” the statement said.

This means Tze Yong will miss the upcoming Singapore Open, scheduled for next Tuesday, where he is slated to face Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the first round.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury during his first-round match against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long at the Malaysian Masters held at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, on Wednesday.

At the time, Tze Yong had already won the first set 22-20 and was leading 4-3 in the second set.

However, he twisted his knee while trying to return a shot from Ka Long, resulting in the injury.

Earlier, Tze Yong had been sidelined for a year due to a back injury and only made his return to competition at the Asian Championships in Ningbo in early April.
