Big brother Tan gives wise advice to Pang Ron-Su Yin

PETALING JAYA: Haste makes waste.

And that’s why former international Tan Boon Heong does not want mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin to rush in their mission to become great as it can lead to mistakes and wasted efforts.

Boon Heong believes patience is the key for Pang Ron-Su Yin to become world beaters.

Pang Ron-Su Yin have struggled to maintain their form after their surprise runners-up finish in the China Masters last November.

Recently, the duo suffered a disappointing second round exit in the German Open after losing to Chinese youngsters Gao Jiaxuan-Wu Mengying in Mulheim.

It was Pang Ron-Su Yin’s third early exit this year after they went down in the first round in both the Opens in Malaysia and India.

The world No. 14 pair were slightly better in the Indonesian Masters where they reached the last eight but still looked far from their best.

Boon Heong believes that Pang Ron-Su Yin need more time to become a top pair.

“Pang Ron-Su Yin need some time to reach a higher level. Not every player peaks at the same time in their careers,” said Boon Heong.

“Some peak faster while others take a longer time. Some players get better as they become older.

“Both Pang Ron and Su Yin need to play longer together and gain more experience at the top level to become an elite pair.”

Pang Ron, who turns 27 on March 29, had struggled to establish himself with other partners earlier in his career before making a timely breakthrough with Su Yin, who will be 22 in June.

The pair were combined towards the end of 2023 and have become Malaysia’s No. 3 mixed doubles duo behind world No. 3 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and world No. 4 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei.

Pang Ron-Su Yin will be keen to regain their form when they compete in the Orleans Masters starting tomorrow in France.

The duo will play a pair from the qualifying round in their opening match.

An improved showing in the tourney will give Pang Ron-Su Yin a much needed confidence boost before they make their debuts together in the prestigious All-England from March 11-16 in Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Tang Jie-Ee Wei and independent pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien will be the other Malaysian representatives in the mixed doubles in Orleans.

The former are the top seeds in the tourney and will face Denmark’s Rasmus Espersen-Amalie Kudsk in the first round while Tien Ci-Chiew Sien will take on China’s Zhu Yijun-Zhang Chi.
