Chan: It’s better for players

Peng Soon: ‘I believe many are tired of the current scoring system, as it has been in use for so long.’

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Olympic silver medallist Chan Peng Soon believes the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) introduction of a new scoring system will inject fresh excitement into the sport.

BWF recently announced that the 15-point format will be reintroduced in selected tournaments from April to October, potentially replacing the current 21-point system.

Peng Soon welcomed the move, saying badminton has evolved over the years, and the revamped scoring system will not only add a new dimension for players but also make matches more thrilling for spectators.

Moreover, with the introduction of this new scoring system, players will not be as burdened as they are under the current format, which clearly takes a toll on their fitness, especially with the demanding tournament schedule.

“I think this new system will benefit current players, especially senior shuttlers, as it could potentially extend their playing careers.

“The 21-point format is more physically demanding and fast-paced. If implemented correctly, the new system might be a good change, as it could work to the players’ advantage.

“I believe many are tired of the current scoring system, as it has been in use for so long. I think it’s time to introduce something new. Let’s discuss it and give it a try first,” said the former mixed doubles player.

Moreover, Peng Soon believes that the change in the scoring system will not reduce the excitement or strip away the essential elements of badminton.

“I don’t think this change will drastically alter playing strategies or eliminate long rallies. However, it should reduce fatigue since the new system is capped at 21 points, unlike the current format, which can stretch to 30 points in the event of a deuce.

“I have played under the seven-point, 15-point, and 21-point systems, and I believe this new format should be fine. Players may need a few weeks to adjust initially, but over time, they will get used to it,” he added.

The proposal to change the badminton scoring system to a 15-point format has been raised multiple times in recent years, including when the Badminton Association of Indonesia and Maldives proposed it in 2021.

However, the change could not be implemented as it failed to gain full support during the BWF annual grand meeting.

The current 21-point system has been in place since 2006, making it the official format for 19 years.
