Jin Wei will have to take a few steps back to aim higher

PETALING JAYA: Goh Jin Wei’s name is in the All-England reserve list but she will not be going even if she makes the cut.

Coach Nova Armada said this was the best time for Jin Wei to stay at home and work her way up to compete in the mid-ranked Badminton World Federation (BWF) tournaments – Super 500 and Super 300 series this year.

The 2017 SEA Games champion Jin Wei is still the country’s top women singles player ranked at No. 47 in the world but she has not reached a desirable form to be contending for titles at a higher level.

Nova said it would be back to the basics for the two-time world junior champion Jin Wei, who lost in the first round of the Malaysian Open (India’s Malvika Bonsod) and Indonesian Masters (Hsu Wenchi of Taiwan) respectively this year.

“She has just returned from the Chinese New Year break. It’s back to hard work in training but All-England is not part of her tournament this year,” said Nova.

“We want her to regroup and rebuild her form to challenge at the mid level tournaments.”

Besides Jin Wei, Nova is also coaching world No. 82 men’s singles shuttler Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin.

“We have sponsors for both of them, and it will be easier for us to send them to the same tournaments. That means, Aidil will have to slowly improve his world ranking too,” he said.

In the recent tournament at the Thailand Masters, Aidil went down to Wang Zhengxing of China in the second round in Bangkok. Zhengxing eventually reached the final but lost to Jason Teh of Singapore on Sunday.
