PETALING JAYA: China's Li Shifeng has been named as the replacement for Viktor Axelen of Denmark, who has withdrawn from the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China.

Axelsen qualified for the Finals by virtue of being the Olympic Games champion but has withdrawn due to a nagging foot injury.

His absence will now open the door for Shifeng and others like Lee Zii Jia, Anders Antonsen of Denmark, China's Shi Yuqi, Kodai Naraoka of Japan, Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan and Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand.

Despite presenting all his documents, Viktor will be fined for his no show. The BWF have made it mandatory for all top players to participate in their top-tier events.

A no show is considered is a breach in their ruling, thus BWF is expected to fine. There will be no fine if the players still turn up despite the injury, and will be encouraged to attend meet and green fan events.

Axelsen shared his displeasure on the matter on his X.

"I'm unfortunately unable to participate in the World Tour Finals this December. I'm dealing with an injury in my left foot, which is causing me a lot of issues and I have been advised to deal with this immediately in order to avoid long term problems.

"I'm very disappointed not being able to play in Hangzhou. Having won the tournament five times and it being one of my favourite tournaments on the tour makes it a hard pill to swallow.

"However my first priority is to get 100% healthy before I compete."

Just hours later, BWF send a letter, asking him to provide all documents or pay the fine.
