PETALING JAYA: The third edition of the Lightning Cup International Badminton Championships this year promises its biggest and most prestigious event yet at Resorts World Genting from Sept 3-6.
After two successful editions, the tournament continues to strengthen its position as one of the region’s premier international badminton festivals for amateur, masters and open category players.
Organised by AMG, in collaboration with Sports Arena Sentosa and Petaling BC, the championship at the Pavilion Hall in SkyIndoor Themepark in Genting will feature 69 event categories with total prizes worth more than RM100,000.
The event is set to attract participants locally and internationally to compete in a unique atmosphere that combines competitive badminton with friendship, sports tourism, and lifelong passion for the game.
Tournament organising chairman Datuk Jack Koh said the Lightning Cup has grown beyond just another badminton competition.
"The Lightning Cup was created to celebrate badminton for everyone.
"Whether you’re still competing at a high level, returning to the sport after many years, or simply passionate about badminton, the championship provides a world-class platform where friendships are built and unforgettable memories are created," he said in a statement.
The tournament will feature competitions across Open, Amateur, Age Group, Combined Age, and the popular Mixed Three-on-Three (3P) categories.
A special VIP Invitational event and a Parent and Child category will further reinforce the tournament’s family-oriented spirit.
Players in the top 100 of the Badminton World Federation rankings are not eligible to participate, while ex-professionals aged 50 and above may enter the amateur group, but they cannot be paired up with another ex-professional in a doubles event.
The age-based structure allows players from their mid-30s through veterans aged 70 and above to continue competing at an international level.
