PETALING JAYA: Genevie Lim’s impressive run at the Asian Junior Championships has earned her a return to the national team, with the women’s doubles player set to resume training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.
Genevie was one of Malaysia’s medal winners in Yatsushiro, Japan, after claiming the girls’ doubles bronze with Low Zi Yu on Sunday.
The bronze medal was even more special as it came in her final year in the junior ranks.
Team manager Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad, who is also the secretary of the Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA), said BAM had already identified Genevie for a recall based on her performances earlier this year.
She finished runner-up in the National Under-21 Championships in January before repeating the feat in the National Under-18 Championships in April, both times partnering Wafa Shahmina Rahman for Sarawak.
“BAM had already planned to bring Genevie back. I received the news from BAM and informed her a few days ago.
“I had also recommended to the Sarawak Badminton Association that Genevie be brought back into BAM. She was previously with BAM but left because of health issues. Now that her condition has improved, the Sarawak Badminton Association recommended that BAM take her back,” said Wan Khalik.
Genevie was previously part of Malaysia’s junior squad before leaving BAM last year to undergo treatment for a thyroid condition.
She will return to the national set-up on a six-month probation period, during which her performances will be monitored.
Genevie described the recall as a major boost as she looks to get her career back on track.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for me to improve my game further. I left BAM in February last year.
“My health condition is the same as what Zi Yu went through previously. It’s stable now, but I still need to take medication,” said Genevie, who idolises Pearly Tan.
