PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are far from being 100% fit for the competition at the Singapore Open, but they are not throwing in the towel just yet.
Despite carrying knee and ankle injuries which they sustained at the Hanoi SEA Games in May, Wei Chong and Kai Wun have vowed not to let the discomfort stop them from giving their best.
“I hope that we could give our best even though we are not in our best condition yet as we are still undergoing rehabilitation and physiotherapy everyday,” said Kai Wun.
Wei Chong said he did not face any difficulties when playing but will feel discomfort on his knee after playing.
“Our injuries are not 100% recovered yet but I don’t struggle to play because I don’t feel any pain when playing.
“But I will have to put some ice on my knee, undergo physiotherapy and ultrasound due to the discomfort,” said Wei Chong.
Before the Singapore Open, Wei Chong-Kai Wun competed in the Malaysia Open (June 28-July 3) and the Malaysia Masters (July 5-10).
In the first round of the Malaysia Open, they were defeated by Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty of India 18-21, 12-21 and subsequently failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Masters after losing to compatriot Mohd Haikal Nazrin-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi 18-21, 14-21.
Kai Wun felt sorry that they were unable to put up a good fight in the two previous tournaments and hoped to make amends by performing well in Singapore.
They will take on compatriots Chia Weijie-Low Hang Yee in the first round today.
Wei Chong looks forward to their debut in this tournament but said Weijie-Hang Yee are tough players.
“It is our first outing and I am excited about it.
“We are used to the way they play because we train together everyday. But the problem is, they know ours too,” joked Wei Chong.
