PETALING JAYA: There was little that Rio Olympics silver medallists Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying could salvage from what was their Olympics swansong.
The world No. 7 went down 13-21, 19-21 in just 37 minutes to second seeds Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China to end their mixed doubles Group D campaign without a single win.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying were looking to bow out with pride but Yilyu-Dongping proved just too hot for them to handle. It was the Malaysians’ eighth straight defeat in as many meetings against the two-time Asian champions.
The win saw Yilyu-Dongping finish as group winners with a 100% win record. Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet, who finished second in the group, will join them in the quarter-finals.
Chun Man-Ying Suet booked their spot by overcoming Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Herttrich 22-20, 20-22, 21-16.
The result left Europe with only one pair, Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith of Britain, in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles event.
Ellis-Smith made a big statement by defeating world No. 2 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand 21-17, 21-19 to take top spot in Group B.
The other quarter-finalists were Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong of China and Seo Seung-jae-Chae Yu-jung of South Korea from Group A; Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino of Japan and Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia (Group C).
