PETALING JAYA: While the doubles may not be Lee Zii Jia’s forte, the men’s singles ace showed he can be just as devastating in the event.

Zii Jia teamed up with Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles to sweep aside Yap Roy King-Peck Yen Wei 15-10,15-9 to steer his team, Terminators, to a comfortable 8-3 victory over Transformers in the BAM Mixed Team Championships at the Academy Badminton Malaysia yesterday.

The team captain contributed two points as he was also victorious in the singles when he thumped Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin 15-4,15-6.

The other six points were scored by Chow Mei Kuan-Pearly Tan in the women’s doubles, Lee Ying Ying (women’s singles), Haikal Nazri-Low Yeen Yuan (mixed doubles), Lee Shun Yang (men’s singles), Mei Kuan-Pei Jing-Pearly and Cheng Tang Jie-Goh Sze Fei-Low Hang Yee (three-on-three).

The Terminators’ second win in as many days put them on the cusp of glory.

They lead the four-team standings with two points, one ahead of Dominators and Avengers with winless Transformers last.

Pei Jing, who forms the world No. 11 partnership with Tan Kian Meng, was all praise for Zii Jia.

“We are close friends off the court, so it wasn’t difficult at all for us to play as a pair, ” said Pei Jing.

“During training sessions, he would normally join us in mixed doubles and be my partner.

“But competition wise, this is our first time and it’s quite a pleasant experience. To be honest, his movement is almost natural, there’s no sign of awkwardness.

“And being a singles player, he’s so good at court coverage. There were few times where I missed the shuttle and he was there to cover for me.

“Zii Jia was so pumped up for the match that he texted me the night before to know what time he should be at the venue to warm up together.”

Zii Jia had previously played doubles with Soh Wooi Yik during his junior days but not since 2014.

Meanwhile, doubles ace Aaron Chia earned some bragging rights against his partner Wooi Yik in the battle of two captains.

Aaron inspired Dominators to beat Avengers 6-5 by twice getting the better of Wooi Yik.

Together with Ng Eng Cheong and Lwi Sheng Hao, the trios scored the sixth and winning point by downing Wooi Yik-Goh Soon Huat-Tee Kai Wun 15-5,15-11 after the match was tied at 5-5.

Earlier in the doubles, Aaron and Eng Cheong defeated Cheam June Wei-Wooi Yik 9-15,15-13,11-8.
