PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have beefed up their coaching stable by hiring Taiwan’s Cheng Wen-hsing.

The 34-year-old Wen-hsing had partnered Chien Yu-chin to the world No. 1 ranking in women’s doubles in 2010.

She was also a World Championship bronze medallist with Yu-chin in 2010 before retiring last year.

Wen-hsing, who also taught at the National Chung Chung University in Taiwan, has signed a one-year contract and been tasked with handling the Form Four and Form Five girls’ doubles department at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

The Taiwanese, who reported for duty, joins the likes of Kwan Yoke Meng, Poh Chai Boon, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari, Zhang Hongyu, Lim Fang Yang, Woon Sze Mei, Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin, Mohd Najib Latif and Chang Kim Wai in the BJSS set-up.

“We felt that it was necessary to beef up the junior programme with more qualified coaches,” said BAM technical director Morten Frost.

“Wen-hsing is a nice addition ... it’s not every day that you have a former world No. 1 coaching you.”
