KUALA LUMPUR: Poor finishing saw shuttler Tee Jing Yi let slip a good chance to nick her second career title.
Third seed Jing Yi lost 15-21, 21-15, 7-21 to Gregoria Mariska of Indonesia in the women’s singles final at the Victor Indonesia International Challenge in Surabaya.
World No. 50 Jing Yi, who was the only Malaysian finalist in the tournament on Sunday, had mixed feelings after losing to the 16-year-old Gregoria.
“She had better strokes and played patiently. I lost control in the decider,” said Jing Yi, who won the Iran Satellite title last year.
“Still, I’ve earned some extra points to qualify for the Olympic Games (next year).”
The 24-year-old will next play in the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold in Bangkok from Sept 29-Oct 4.
In men’s singles, former Asian junior champion Soo Teck Zhi was the best performer when he upset top seed Firman Abdul Kholik 13-21, 21-12, 21-13 in the quarter-finals.
Teck Zhi then went down fighting 21-16, 19-21, 14-21 to eventual champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in the semi-finals.
Two senior shuttlers – Tan Chun Seang and Liew Daren – crashed out in the quarter-finals on Friday.
