SHAH ALAM: It’s hard to imagine Perak shuttler Eogene Ewe has yet to smash down a medal at the Malaysia Games (Sukma).
The 21-year-old has tasted glory on the international stage, having won both the Slovenia Open and Malaysia International Challenge last year.
Now in his third and final Sukma before he passes the age threshold, Eogene hopes to etch his name in the men’s singles competition starting at the Setia City Convention Centre tomorrow.
“It would mean a lot to me if I can finally win a gold medal in my last Sukma,” said the national shuttler Eogene, who has yet to make his mark.
The world No. 62’s last two Sukma outings in 2022 and 2024 concluded in the early stages of the competition, and he left empty-handed.
This time though, Eogene will enter the court with some new tricks up his sleeves as he wants to emulate the skilful moves of his idol – the current world No. 1 Shi Yuqi.
“I’m not a naturally skilful player but I’ve always wanted to be. I have been closely observing Yuqi’s games and learning from his techniques. I hope to add some of those skills to my gameplay.”
Eogene, however, admitted that his success at senior level could add more pressure to his quest for gold.
“I’m the most senior here, so the players are trying to beat me to prove a point. But I take it as part of the competitive spirit.”
