KUALA LUMPUR: Experienced national archers Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki and Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh have set a new national record in the mixed team compound event at the World Cup Stage II in Shanghai, China on Friday (May 9).

Juwaidi-Fatin set the new mark when they defeated France's Nicolas Girard-Clemence Fraigneau 159-154 in the second round of the mixed team compound event, according to the tournament website.

The Malaysian pair erased the old mark of 158 points that they had set en route to defeating a South Korea's Oh Yoohyun-Choi Yonghee 158-155 during the semi-finals of the 2023 Asia Cup Stage III-World Ranking Tournament in Singapore.

Juwaidi-Fatin then equalled the mark at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games on Oct 2, 2023 when they defeated Singapore's Ng Woon Teng-Contessa Loh 158-151.

Luck, however, was not on their side in the final when they lost by one arrow 156-157 to Batuhan Akcaoglu-Hazal Burun of Turkiye in the semi-finals.

However, they still have a chance to return home with a bronze medal when they take on India's Abhishek Verma-Madhura Dhamangaonkar of India next.

"Never expected to set a national record just now, because our focus was to shoot well and advance to the next round. It'll be quite tough against world No. 1 India,” said Fatin. - Bernama
