Archery challenge ends as Suresh misses out on medal rounds

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s challenge in para archery at the Paris Paralympics has come to an end after former world champion S. Suresh (pic) failed in his bid to reach the medal rounds in the men’s recurve Open competition at Les Invalides.

Suresh started well by beating American Eric Bennett 6-2 in the 1/16 stage of the elimination round in what was a rematch of their world championships final match in Holland in 2019.

Suresh had defeated the American to become the first world para archery champion for Malaysia.

However, the Malaysian archer failed to keep the momentum going when he lost to Mohd Reza Arab Ameri of Iran 2-6 in the next round.

Reza lost the first set but would go on to win the next three sets to secure his place in the last eight.

Suresh was the last Malaysian para archer remaining in Paris.

In para cycling, Mohd Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin finished a commendable fifth in the men’s (C1) individual time trial road race event in 22:27.91s.

Spaniard Ricardo Ten Argiles took gold in 20:39.53s with Michael Teuber taking silver for Germany in 21:18.14s while the bronze went to Poland’s Zbigniew Maciejewski, who finished in 21:18.94s.
