Ageing LRT system needs serious attention

MALAYSIA’S first-generation Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems in the Klang Valley, including the Kelana Jaya Line and the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line, were commissioned about 25 years ago. While these systems have contributed tremendously to urban mobility and helped reduce traffic congestion in the valley, ageing infrastructure inevitably requires more intensive maintenance, upgrading, and component replacement.

Over the past few years, commuters have experienced repeated service disruptions, signalling failures, train delays, technical breakdowns, and now derailments. Such incidents not only inconvenience the public but also gradually erode confidence in public transportation.
