As the rhythmic beat of the drums and the vibrant dance of the lion fill our streets, Malaysia once again stands at the threshold of a new lunar cycle. This year, as we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse, we are reminded of the unique characteristics this zodiac embodies, which are energy, speed, and an indomitable spirit.
In the context of our nation’s journey, these traits are exactly what we need to tackle the most pressing challenge of our generation, which is environmental sustainability. The transition into 2026 is not merely a change of the calendar, but a continuation of a momentum that we have built with great resolve throughout the past year, guided by the vision of a resilient and progressive nation.
The Lunar New Year has always been a season of renewal and reflection. Families gather to sweep away the old and make way for the new, a tradition that resonates deeply with our mission at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.
This philosophy of renewal translates into our national commitment to restoring our natural ecosystems and decarbonising our economy. Looking back at 2025, we have much to be proud of. It was a year where we successfully expanded our total protected forest areas and intensified our crackdown on illegal encroachment through integrated enforcement operations.
These milestones were achieved through the tireless pace and collective strength of our agencies, reflecting the core values of a Madani society where sustainability and prosperity must walk hand in hand.
As we gallop into this new year, the Fire element of 2026 symbolises a powerful transformation that must be felt in the way we manage our natural resources. Our collective prosperity in 2026 and beyond depends heavily on how well we protect the Green Gold of our nation.
In 2025, we laid the groundwork by launching the National Biodiversity Strategic Plan and enhancing our carbon credit framework, which has positioned Malaysia as a key player in the regional green economy. We are now intensifying efforts to gazette even more permanent forest reserves to ensure that our carbon sinks remain intact.
This is vital in maintaining the ecological balance that sustains our livelihoods, especially as we navigate land management and transboundary conservation efforts with a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.
One of the most profound traditions of this season is the giving of red packets or ang pow, which symbolise the passing of blessings from one generation to the next. In a modern context, environmental sustainability is the ultimate red packet we can offer to our children.
Following the implementation of our climate adaptation grants in 2025, which helped vulnerable communities bolster their flood defences, we are committed to making our nation even more resilient. We must recognise that sustainability is not a solo race.
It is a marathon that we must run together, anchored by the principles of compassion and social justice. Whether it is reducing the use of single-use plastics or being more mindful of our water consumption, every small action contributes to our national momentum.
The Year of the Fire Horse demands that we act with courage and decisiveness. We are building on the successes of the past year where we saw a significant increase in public-private partnerships for reforestation to drive even more ambitious goals.
By protecting our natural heritage, we are not just guarding trees but securing the very lungs of our nation and ensuring that our biodiversity remains a legacy for the future. As we enjoy the festivities, let us resolve to channel this energy into our environmental advocacy.
Let us race toward a future where Gong Xi Fa Cai is not just a wish for wealth, but a celebration of a flourishing and sustainable Malaysia.
Happy Lunar New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai.
