THE government’s initiative to improve the country’s rail infrastructure – aimed at shifting freight (cargo) transportation from roads to rails – as announced recently by Transport Minister Anthony Loke is the way forward for enhancing freight transport efficiency in the country.

The road-to-rail strategy is a vital component of the National Transport Policy and part of the 13th Malaysia Plan. Malaysia is an export-based country, hence the management of freight is vital to compete and provide a cost effective, environmentally sustainable freight ecosystem.
