THE recent poisoning incidents of stray dogs and cats by unknown persons in two popular destinations in Penang and Langkawi have somewhat tarnished the image of the country globally.
Animal rights groups and citizens are outraged by the blatant and illegal use of dangerous substances to poison peaceful and harmless creatures sharing the space with humans.
The public demands the relevant authorities to view these poisoning incidents seriously. There were several such incidents in the past, but despite all the probes done by the authorities, no one was taken to task.
Questions are now being raised as to the competence and seriousness of the investigating authorities.
With all the necessary resources and technological tools at hand, it’s disappointing to note that the relevant authorities have yet to charge any individuals with the horrendous crime of poisoning harmless strays that are protected by the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
The poisoning of harmless strays is a wake-up call for animal lovers and caring citizens to join hands to demand justice as stipulated under the Animal Welfare Act.
Strays are living souls that feel pain, fear and love. They may not have a home, but they have every right to live among us.
When these creatures are subjected to cruel poisoning and harassment, it’s a failure of humanity and should concern each and everyone of us.
On behalf of all animal lovers, I urge the authorities to treat the stray poisoning incidents seriously. The easy availability of poisonous substances should be viewed with concern by the relevant authorities. Imagine if the poison used end up contaminating our food and water resources.
