AI-driven child exploitation danger

Image: Human-created, AI-aided

RECENTLY, Britain established a powerful legal precedent by strictly prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate explicit images of children and minors – becoming the first country to do so. In light of the ability of AI to manipulate images of real-life people, Britain has made it an offence to “nudify” children by processing, taking, making or distributing such content.

Deepfake technology leveraged to defraud the public has seen an alarming spike in usage, with AI-generated imagery used to peddle investment scams by modifying publicly available video and images of prominent individuals. In Malaysia, there has a been a 1,000% increase in deepfake scams between 2022 and 2023.
