IN Malaysia, blood pressure monitoring devices are regulated by the Medical Devices Authority (MDA). Only those with a certificate of approval from the MDA can be sold in the market, and they are usually priced between RM100 and RM300 per unit.
Recently, a doctor posted a video on social media to raise concerns over low-quality blood pressure monitors or BP meters that are easily purchased online for as low as RM15.
He warned about the dangers of using uncertified health monitoring devices, saying they could potentially lead to a public health emergency.
Uncertified BP meters often provide inconsistent or incorrect readings, leading to false perceptions of blood pressure levels. Patients using these devices could make inappropriate adjustments to their medication without proper medical guidance.
Having monitored the rampant availability of these cheap, uncertified BP meters on eCommerce platforms, Alpro Pharmacy is cautioning the public to be more vigilant when purchasing health monitoring devices.
To check if the BP meters are registered, verify the registration status on the MDA website: https://mdar.mda.gov.my/frontend/web/index.php?r=carian.
Alternatively, purchasers can bring their BP meter to a nearby community pharmacy to check the authenticity of the device.
The same must be done for other health monitoring devices such as glucometers and pulse oximeters, which must be purchased from trusted sources to guarantee their accuracy and reliability.
