MALAYSIA is taking a risk with its one-month visa free travel which started from Dec 1 for Indian and Chinese nationals now that there is a resurgence in Covid-19 cases. Our health authorities must therefore be on the alert. The current rainy spell also brings about various respiratory ailments, especially colds and influenza.
No doubt tourism would get a big boost as the end of the year is normally the preferred time for families to travel together due to the festive holidays.
The main problem associated with visa-free travel, especially for a month or a limited period, is that it will be abused. The authorities need to ensure that the tourists and travellers return to their countries.
Malaysia is facing a major problem now as quite a number of those arriving as tourists do not go back, and they become a liability. Some seek work and business opportunities and stay as long as they can.
The Home Ministry must take action against these overstayers, some of whom may be involved in economic crimes, scams and swindling unsuspecting people.
The image of the country could also be affected by the severe action taken against these offenders when they are rounded up by the authorities.
