EVERY August, Malaysians proudly commemorate our nation’s independence by displaying the Jalur Gemilang, attending parades, and participating in patriotic events. How-ever, this month should be about more than all that – it should be a time for deep reflection on the true meaning of independence and our collective responsibility to safeguard and strengthen the nation for future generations.
Political independence, achieved officially on Aug 31, 1957, gave us the right to govern ourselves. Yet true independence goes beyond political freedom. It also means freedom from poverty, corruption, ignorance, discrimination, injustice, extremism, hatred, and fear. It means creating a society where every Malay-sian has equal opportunities to succeed regardless of race, religion, or background.
