Estonia marks 35th anniversary of restoration of independence

TALLINN, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Events were held across Estonia on Thursday to mark the 35th anniversary of the restoration of the country's independence.

The main commemorative events took place in the capital with a flag-raising ceremony and the laying of flowers at the Aug. 20 Memorial Stone.

The Estonian parliament and the August 20 Club, which brought together surviving members of the Supreme Council who voted for the restoration of independence in 1991, held a joint formal sitting. Estonian President Alar Karis and parliamentary leaders attended the event.

In addition, public celebrations were held at the Tallinn TV Tower and the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom, with family activities, exhibitions and programs recalling the events that led to the restoration of independence.

Similar events were also held in cities including Tartu, the second-largest city in Eatonia.

On Aug. 20, 1991, the Supreme Council of Estonia adopted a resolution restoring the country's independence from the Soviet Union.
