Reminder to be on the lookout for scams

THE Alliance For A Safe Community (Ikatan) wishes to remind Malaysians to be on the lookout for online scams, which have increased significantly over the past few years.

A total of 98,607 online fraud cases involving losses totalling RM3.3bil was reported nationwide from 2017 until 2021, according to Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) assistant director (telecommunications criminal investigation) Supt Rozeni Ismail.

He said most of the cases involved Macau scams, online sales and purchases, non-existent money loans and love scams.

Cybercriminals are taking advantage of people’s personal information and data stored online to commit such crimes.

These crimes demand better cybersecurity, which is not about being tech-savvy, but rather, being more vigilant when sharing personal information online.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, more people have been using the Internet not only to stay connected with family and friends, but also for commercial and other purposes. It is time to enact a more comprehensive law to deal with crimes involving the wrong usage of people’s data online.
