WHEN MCA president Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong commented on the proposed debate between BN-MCA candidate for the Bandar Hilir state seat, Jasmine Lok, and DAP candidate Leng Chau Yen, he made absolutely no mention of Leng’s congenital condition or speech impediment.
Instead, it was DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke himself who brought up Leng’s physical condition in public. Therefore, when Loke accuses MCA of bullying Leng Chau Yen, we must ask: who was it that actually turned Leng’s physical condition into a political issue?
The proposed debate was intended solely to address public policy issues and had absolutely nothing to do with the DAP candidate’s personal circumstances.
Its real purpose was to seek an explanation from Leng regarding her position on the Car-Free Zone policy.
When DAP previously worked with Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Melaka state government, she supported the policy. Yet, with the state election approaching, she now appears to have taken an opposing position.
MCA candidate Jasmine Lok therefore proposed the debate to give Leng an opportunity to explain this change in position publicly to voters.
This is fundamentally a matter of policy, a candidate’s integrity, the public interest and the people’s right to seek answers.
Loke’s attempt to portray the proposed debate as an attack on Leng’s physical condition is an effort to divert attention from the actual issue and turn public sentiment against MCA.
To reiterate, it was Loke himself who politicised Leng’s physical condition, whereas MCA’s intention was simply to discuss public policy and seek an explanation for her change in position.
Respond to Ang Woei Shang’s challenge first
In a separate matter, Loke should respond to Ang Woei Shang’s challenge before issuing any further challenges to MCA.
Political commentator and internet personality, Ang Woei Shang, had previously issued a public challenge to Loke for a debate. MCA therefore urges Loke to respond directly to and address Ang’s challenge first.
Loke’s refusal to take up Ang’s challenge while simultaneously challenging MCA president Dr Wee to a debate raises questions about the sincerity of his willingness to engage in public debate.
Such an approach appears more like political theatrics than a genuine intention to discuss issues of public concern.
