Cultivating self-sufficiency in food

I STRONGLY believe that a special committee should be set up to formulate long-term plans to strengthen our food security. In the event of an emergency, it will be our periuk nasi that would be of prime consideration, not our high-tech industries or services.

Perhaps we should revisit Tun Abdul Razak Hussein’s (Malaysia’s second prime minister) Green Book Programme, which was launched in 1974 and aimed to make Malaysia self-sufficient in food production by encouraging farmers to grow vegetables and rear livestock.
