WHILE weak enforcement may be the reason why motorists continue to violate traffic laws, it looks like lack of follow-up action on those who have been issued traffic summonses to ensure they pay the fines on time and taking them to court for failure to do so could be a bigger contributor to this problem.
In the most recent exercise by the police to offer 50% discount on traffic fines in Penang, it was reported that one motorist had five unpaid summonses accumulated over the past two years and that his brother-in-law had eight unpaid summonses, “Making the most of discounts” (The Star, Dec 27). Another motorist and his brother each had six unpaid summonses.
