When plagiarism is not plagiarism

I REFER to the letter “Gross violation of academic integrity” (Views, The Star, Jan 24; online at bit.ly/star_cheat).

I agree with the author’s observations. However, I believe the source of the problem is poor training rather than any deliberate attempt on the students’ part to be dishonest. Our current understanding of academic integrity is also perhaps somewhat flawed and outdated.
