Education is the key to success

RECENTLY, a desperate mother, with tears welling up in her eyes, said in a trembling voice that she has no alternative but to take her son out of school because he shows no interest at all in his studies.

From her point of view, instead of killing his time idling at school, hunting for a job would be a better prospect.

After all, there are a number of successful entrepreneurs who confess they were not keen on studying and performed badly in their examinations.

Nevertheless, through my observation and experience in education the past 26 years, I strongly believe that education plays a vital role in nurturing our children.

It’s easy to teach a child but to educate a child is not an easy task. Education is not solely for scoring a string of As.

On the contrary, it is more important to emphasise virtues and moral values. Our success or failure in life is not judged by how much money we earn but how we earn it.

For those students out there who might think schooling is a waste of time, just a piece of advice from me: Regard the ultimate goal of education as a lifelong process of learning, grasp every opportunity not only to gain knowledge but cultivate the versatility within you when you are at school.

As Tom Bodett said, the difference between school and life is this: “In school, we are taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, we are given a test that teaches us a lesson!”
