A MAN from Sibu, enticed by an offer of RM8,000 for his online game account, was scammed of nearly RM50,000, China Press reported.
The 32-year-old supervisor received a message on WhatsApp from a person identifying himself as Xu on March 11.
Xu offered to buy his online game account for RM8,000, which the man readily accepted. However, Xu then claimed he could not withdraw the money until additional funds were deposited into his bank account.
Unaware it was a scam, the man transferred RM49,000 to unknown bank accounts in four separate payments.
Xu then claimed he needed to wait 22 hours to withdraw RM8,000 and return the man’s money.
At 6.30pm that day, Xu contacted the man again saying that the withdrawal would be delayed by another 72 hours.
That was when the man realised he had been scammed. He later lodged a police report on the matter.
