Death toll from collapsed building in Kenya reaches 8

NAIROBI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the collapsed 18-story building in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has risen to eight after six more bodies were recovered on Thursday, as the search and recovery operation entered its 14th day.

Simon Osumba, the Nairobi North County commissioner, confirmed that four of the six were women and two were men.

"We have recovered six more bodies and the total is now eight. We have reached the basement of the building," Osumba said late Thursday, adding that the recovery operation was 95 percent complete.

Duncan Ochieng, the director of the National Disaster Management Unit, said five people remained unaccounted for as the recovery operation entered its final stage.

"We are still searching for five people whose whereabouts remain unknown," Ochieng said.

The 18-story building, which was under construction, collapsed on Oct. 23 in Eastleigh, a high-density commercial and residential suburb of Nairobi.
