LOS ANGELES, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- One police officer was killed and three others wounded in a shootout with a suspect aboard a transit bus in Lakewood, U.S. state of Colorado, on Thursday evening, local authorities said.
A bystander was also injured, while the suspect was killed.
"As we process the loss of our fallen agent and surround the three agents injured in last night's shooting and their families with our love and support, our surrounding law enforcement partners have graciously stepped up to take care of our city," the Lakewood Police Department said on X Friday.
The shooting occurred at around 6:30 p.m. local time.
Lakewood police officers responded to a report that a suspect involved in an earlier hit-and-run had been spotted boarding a northbound transit bus. When officers confronted the suspect aboard the bus, the suspect opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect, according to the department.
Four Lakewood officers were taken to local hospitals with serious to critical injuries, the department said.
The department later confirmed that one of the officers had died from the injuries, while the three others were in stable condition.
