Russia launches commercial 5G mobile networks


MOSCOW, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media announced Friday that Russia has put its first 5G mobile networks into commercial operation.

The ministry said that in the first phase, 5G networks have been launched in 16 cities including Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, covering roughly 10 million people.

The services are provided by Russia's four major telecom operators.

According to the ministry, Russia will gradually expand 5G coverage, with plans to extend the networks to another 50 cities by the end of 2026.
