WWII shells found in Warsaw prompt evacuation of 4,000

WARSAW, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- More than 50 artillery shells dating back to World War II were recovered from an excavation site in central Warsaw on Friday, prompting the evacuation of about 4,000 people, Polish broadcaster TVN24 reported.

Workers initially discovered unexploded ordnance on Thursday during excavation work near the intersection of Grzybowska and Zelazna streets, said Bartlomiej Sniadala of the Warsaw police press team.

A bomb disposal unit was deployed to the site on Friday. Eight nearby buildings were evacuated, while pedestrian and vehicle traffic was barred within a radius of about 400 meters.

TVN24 said two similar discoveries of unexploded wartime ordnance had been reported in central Warsaw the previous week.
