SARAJEVO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival opened on Friday evening at the Sarajevo National Theater, with more than 250 films from around 70 countries and regions set to be screened during the eight-day event.
"Fatherland," directed by Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski, was screened as the opening film after making its world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
A total of 51 films are competing for the Heart of Sarajevo awards across four competition sections: narrative feature film, feature and short documentary film, narrative short film and student short film. Among them, 21 films will have their world premiere, six their international premiere, one its European premiere and 23 their regional premiere.
Jovan Marjanovic, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival, said the festival sees its competition program as not only a selection of some of the best new films but also a reflection of where regional cinema is headed.
Founded in 1995, the Sarajevo Film Festival has grown into one of Southeast Europe's major cultural events.
