GEORGETOWN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of bodies recovered after the sinking of the MV Barima in Guyana has risen to 10, the Guyanese government said Monday.
In a statement, the government said that by 12:35 p.m. Monday, eight bodies had been recovered during the operation, bringing the total number of recovered bodies since the incident to 10, the statement said.
"The Government remains fully committed to the operation and continues to deploy all available resources to locate and account for every person who was aboard the MV Barima at the time of the tragic incident," the statement said.
The MV Barima, carrying 116 passengers, sent out a distress signal before sinking off the coast of Guyana on Saturday night, prompting an emergency search-and-rescue operation.
Guyana's Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said Sunday that 67 people had been rescued, including 15 children.
The ferry had been scheduled to travel from the capital Georgetown to Port Kaituma in northwestern Guyana.
