Cyberattack on refrigeration systems hits French supermarkets: media

By Sun Yi

PARIS, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- A large-scale cyberattack targeting the refrigeration systems of hundreds of French supermarkets caused losses that could reach several million euros, French news channel BFMTV reported on Monday, citing industry sources.

Hackers targeted refrigeration control systems made by Danish manufacturer Danfoss, which are widely used in French stores, the report said.

According to the report, the hackers remotely triggered a forced and continuous defrost cycle, setting the target temperature to 50 degrees Celsius.

"Targeting equipment essential for preserving fresh produce and supplying food to the French people is a matter of extreme gravity and is unprecedented. It is unacceptable," Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Cooperative U, said in a post on X.
