Train fire halts Madrid-Barcelona high-speed services

MADRID, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- High-speed rail services between Madrid and Barcelona were suspended in both directions on Monday after a fire broke out on an AVE train in northeastern Spain, forcing the evacuation of 283 passengers, rail operator Renfe said.

The fire was detected in the train's rear driving cab at around 4:05 p.m. (1405 GMT) near Ricla in Zaragoza province. The train had departed Madrid's Puerta de Atocha station, bound for Figueres near the French border.

All passengers were evacuated under safety protocols with no injuries reported. Firefighters from Zaragoza's provincial fire service responded to the incident.

Renfe warned that the suspension could last throughout Monday and offered free ticket changes and refunds for affected services. No timetable for restoring services was immediately available.
