Number of people in shelters after Venezuela quakes rises to 14,634


CARACAS, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The number of people housed in shelters after the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 14,634, Hector Rodriguez, vice president for social and territorial affairs, said Tuesday.

According to an update posted on Telegram by Rodriguez, who is also the Venezuelan education minister, the installed capacity of shelters for quake-affected people has also increased to 20,227.

Most of the shelters, which Venezuelan authorities call "Temporary Camps," are located in Caracas, followed by La Guaira and Miranda states.

"State institutions, the private sector, communities and multilateral organizations are working side by side to expand logistical and human capacities, ensuring that every family receives all possible support," Rodriguez said.

According to official figures released Monday, the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela have killed 3,535 people, injured 16,740 and left 17,854 people homeless.
