Guimaraes accepts blame for Brazil World Cup exit

NEW YORK, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Bruno Guimaraes admitted his part in Brazil's World Cup exit on Tuesday after missing a first-half penalty against Norway.

Erling Haaland made Brazil pay with a late brace in Sunday's round-of-16 match as Norway won 2-1, condemning Brazil to its earliest World Cup elimination since 1990.

"I've written and deleted this so many times that I've lost count," Guimaraes wrote in a social media post. "I've always been here after the victories, so it's only right that I show up and don't shy away from speaking to you after a defeat."

He added: "I accept my responsibility, as I always have, and this time is no different."

The 28-year-old described the defeat in New Jersey as the most painful moment of his life and said his children helped put the loss into perspective.

"The first thing my children said when I woke up was, 'Dad, let's play football.' That's when I realized that, regardless of whether the days are good or bad, football will always be my greatest love."
