NAIROBI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Kenya received a record 931.8 billion shillings (about 7.20 billion U.S. dollars) in diaspora remittances between June 2024 and May 2025, according to the newly released report by the country's central bank.
According to the Remittances Household Survey (2025 RHS), cash transfers accounted for 91 percent of total inflows, while in-kind remittances comprised the remaining 9 percent.
"The United States of America was the largest source of inflows, contributing 43.5 percent of total remittances, followed by Germany and Australia," says the survey conducted by the Central Bank of Kenya in collaboration with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and Financial Sector Deepening Trust Kenya.
Serving as Kenya's first comprehensive nationwide assessment of household remittance inflows and outflows, the survey reveals that in-kind remittances consisted primarily of clothing, footwear, and consumer electronics like laptops and mobile phones.
According to the survey, formal channels remain the preferred mode for remittance transfers, with banks and mobile money platforms accounting for over 92 percent of inflows.
