Severe weather disrupts traffic across BiH

SARAJEVO, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snowfall in higher-altitude regions and stormy weather have caused widespread traffic disruptions across Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), local authorities said on Thursday.

The country's automobile association BIHAMK warned that traffic is slow and difficult, particularly in mountainous areas, and reminded drivers that winter equipment is mandatory for all vehicles.

The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute issued an orange warning for strong winds and heavy rainfall, especially in the northwestern region, where precipitation is expected to reach between 30 and 70 liters per square meter. Rain is forecast to turn into sleet and snow in higher regions.

Authorities introduced additional restrictions on key roads following the sudden cold snap. These measures include mandatory snow chains for heavy vehicles on the country's northwestern Bihac-Bosanski Petrovac route and temporary bans at certain border crossings with Croatia.

In BiH's capital, Sarajevo, traffic congestion intensified as ongoing roadworks combined adverse weather conditions to cause kilometer-long queues during peak hours, disrupting both private and public transport.

Officials have advised citizens to plan their journey carefully, use alternative routes, and remain cautious amid deteriorating weather conditions.
