Rwanda's economy expands 9.4 pct in 2025, surpassing gov't target

KIGALI, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's economy grew by 9.4 percent in 2025, surpassing the projected target of 7.0 percent, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning announced on Monday.

The figures were released during a joint press conference by the Rwandan Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Yusuf Murangwa, and Jean Claude Mwizerwa, deputy director general of the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.

According to the official GDP report, the value of the economy at current market prices reached 23,387 billion Rwandan francs (about 16 million U.S. dollars) in 2025, a substantial increase from 19,918 billion Rwandan francs recorded in 2024.

"We projected 7.0 percent, but the final numbers show we reached 9.4 percent. This is strong, resilient growth," said Murangwa. "Under the second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), we expect the economy to grow by 9.3 percent on average. If we can sustain this figure, we will deliver growth that goes beyond the numbers."

Quarterly figures show a steady climb from 6.5 percent in the first quarter to 7.8 percent in the second, before surging to 11.8 percent in the third and closing the year at 11.2 percent in the fourth.

According to the finance ministry, services, the largest contributor to GDP at 52 percent, grew by 9 percent, while industry expanded by 11 percent, accounting for 22 percent of GDP.

Agriculture grew by 7 percent, representing 20 percent of GDP, the ministry added.
