China's Wu Yibing, Wang Xinyu advance into US Open second round


WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Wu Yibing and Wang Xinyu both claimed straight-sets victories to start their campaign at the 2026 US Open on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Wu swept Australia's Adam Walton 7-6 (2), 6-2, 7-5 to reach the men's singles second round.

In the women's singles first round, Wang, 24, had a smooth start to see off Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-2 in 78 minutes, while Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai, 37, lost to 31st seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6-3, 6-2.

On Monday, Chinese players Zheng Qinwen, Wang Xiyu and Shang Juncheng will take to the court in the first round.
