2 killed, 13 injured due to rooftop snow in Russia

MOSCOW, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two people have been killed and 13 others injured in Russia since the beginning of 2026 due to falling snow and ice from rooftops, Russia's emergencies ministry said Saturday.

Nationwide, 44 cases of roof collapses caused by excessive snow load have been recorded as of Feb. 13, the ministry said.

It stressed the urgent need to clear snow from rooftops, especially at social facilities and locations with large crowds, calling for coordinated efforts from regional authorities and local governments to promptly carry out the work.

January 2026 has become the snowiest month in Moscow in more than two centuries, with the city experiencing the heaviest snowfall in 56 years on Jan. 9.
