Lebanon transfers 128 more Syrian prisoners to Syria

BEIRUT, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese authorities on Wednesday transferred a second batch of 128 convicted Syrian prisoners to Syria via the Masnaa border crossing in eastern Lebanon, under a bilateral prisoner transfer agreement in February, according to a source at Lebanon's General Security.

The source told Xinhua that all legal and administrative procedures were completed before the handover, allowing the detainees to serve the remainder of their sentences in Syria.

The source noted that the transfer followed an initial batch of 132 prisoners handed over in March.

The issue of Syrian prisoners in Lebanese jails remains one of several outstanding bilateral files between Beirut and Damascus, together with border demarcation, smuggling and missing persons. Further transfers are expected under the ongoing bilateral judicial agreement.
