U.S. stocks close lower

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 215.67 points, or 0.45 percent, to 47,739.32. The S&P 500 sank 23.89 points, or 0.35 percent, to 6,846.51. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 32.224 points, or 0.14 percent, to 23,545.904.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with communication services and materials leading the laggards by dropping 1.77 percent and 1.66 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, technology bucked the trend by rising 0.93 percent.
